[ardour-users] Ardour was not fast enough

I've had an amazing first time experience with Ardour. I was able to
record 16 glorious tracks of audio, use DSP effects liberally, and
export to wav.

But something has gone amiss. Now I can't seem to make it through a
playback without encountering "Jack has either been shutdown or it
disconnected Ardour because Ardour was not fast enough. You can save
the session and/or try to reconnect to JACK." Often I can't reconnect
without killing and starting Ardour first.

So I suppose I'm at or near my hardware limit. I really don't want to
abandon the work I've done so far on this track. Can anyone suggest
strategies for improving my performance, at least temporarily, until I'm
done with this song and/or can upgrade hardware?

Thus far I've tried tuning the hard drives, but that didn't buy me much.

Right now my audio files reside on the same, single hard drive that
houses my OS. Do you think I would see significant gains if I were to
add another hard drive, and copied my ardour files there? Enough to
compensate for the problem I have now?
