I don't know the details on this and how Ardour handles it, but you
must be right, as the meters go above the clipping point.

The thing that mystified me during my last Ardour session:

I was recording one stereo track at a time, each of which had its
inputs and outputs set to my master bus.  Watching the metering, I
noticed that the meters for any particular track were consistently
lower than the bus meter.  Didn't make a lot of sense to me.

But I agree with you Joe - the best thing is to trust your ears.
After all, that's what really matters!
