the problem with keyboard bindings is that in gtk1, the design really
isn't very friendly towards multi-window applications like ardour. when
you press the space bar to start the transport, it is supposed to do
that no matter which window you are in. the menu/keyboard accelerator
system in gtk1 is built around the idea that there is only 1 window in
which a given binding is effective, and as a result, ardour has to do a
lot of work to build a key handling system. however ...

absolutely agreed, and it is planned for the 2.0 port to gtk2.
