I didn't hear it last night either, using the exact same Ardour.  In fact, I 
didn't notice any weird volume things on the audio tracks I was monitoring.  

However, I did notice something weird on the track I was recording the tape 
sync from sequencer on.  There was always signal showing up on this track.  
But when I hit record enable, the level jumped up, by about 3 db it looked 
like.  This could be due to the way I had it routed, though.  It is a mono 
track with two outs.  Only one of the outs is hooked up, and it is not hooked 
up to the master bus.  Instead is hooked up directly to a separate ALSA 
output port on my interface, as I obviously don't want to monitor a tape 
sync.
