I've had good success with 2.6.3 (gentoo-dev-sources) on a Fujitsu Lifebook 
N3010 (2.8 GHz P4), using an RME Hammerfall DSP.

2.6.3 (gentoo-dev-sources again) also seems to work good for me on an Athlon 
XP 2100 system with an ASUS A7K333 (or something similar).  Again, using the 
RME Hammerfall DSP.  However, I haven't used this setup nearly as much as the 
laptop
