It works for me.  You have to be in Object mouse mode.

Agreed.

Hmm.  Sometimes it doesn't show up, and hovering over it once
is enough to keep it up for me.

Just use your window manager decorations/functions to close it.
It isn't modal.

Go ahead and file a mantis report for the button naming and envelope
visisbility issues.  http://ardour.org/mantis
