After experimenting yesterday I discovered a couple of interesting things:-

1)  My "maxed-out cpu" problem appears to have crept in sometime around svn
3707.

2)  My laptop seems to be using NVidia drivers but ISN'T using hardware
acceleration.

I'm assuming the drivers are NVidia because typing  "less
/etc/X11/xorg.conf|grep Driver"  gives me this, among the listed output::-

Driver "nv"

and I'm assuming "nv" is short for NVidia.  Typing  "glxinfo|grep direct\
rendering"  produces this:-

Direct rendering: No

I'm working on the assumption that if it's an NVidia driver it's probably
capable of supporting hardware acceleration.  Therefore maybe I just need to
do something to enable it (e.g. add something to xorg.conf, or something
like that).  Does anyone have any suggestions I could try?
