dead in the water. or at least floating face down :) 

to be honest, i've given up on all existing distributions, with the
possible exception of 64studio (though this exception is pending).

IMHO, the aims of existing linux distributions differ substantively from
the goals required to make newcomers to audio on linux feel happy, at
least those with existing experience of other systems. they also have
too many conflicting goals, especially when it comes to system updates.
its not that you can't take one of the existing distributions and make
it work for realtime, low latency audio stuff. its that even when you've
done this, you haven't solved the major issues that will confront the
biggest potential audience for ardour and linux audio apps in general.
