ulimit -n will tell you your maximum.

You can upgrade it to something more appropriate by editing
your /etc/security/limits.conf to have a line for
your group (I use @audio, some use @jackaudio) and mine looks like:

@audio - nofile 8192
@audio - nice -20
@audio - memlock unlimited
@audio          -       rtprio          99

change it, log out, log back in again, do a ulimit -n
