[Ardour-Dev] Payed downloads for Ardourvst on GNU/Linux

While I love the idea, I don't see how it's going to be effective unless
Ardour officially offers binaries of every different distribution. The
distros mentioned above are not the only ones, and to work "in corporation"
with every known (meta-)distro that has a sizeable community will be too
difficult of a task to maintain. However, another way is that any interested
party can provide the binary for a particular distribution (for which the
party is aknowledged as being the Ardour packager) and it can be added to
the upstream database.

Yet another way to go about it is for a note to be provided upon
installation. This will be distribution-specific and it will ask the user
for at least $1 to get a key to unlock VST. Man, is this ugly.

Just kidding. I meant, the message will tell the user to donate at least $1
but the VST support will be there as usual.

Why this model works for Mac is because there's no Mac OS {Studio,
Multimedia, Hyper, Ultra, Contraband} 10.9.10-rt35 or so to speak.
Furthermore, that's for AU - not VST based on reverse-engineered code.

Another reason why this will not work for us is because the vestige header
is open-source. As such, if Ardour asks for a mandatory one-time donation to
release a binary which was compiled against vestige, then all other similar
projects (LMMS, Qtractor, Rosegarden) will have to follow suit. Now you tell
me - will it be ethical?
