there is no upper limit defined by the software

BUT BUT BUT BUT

it is an EXTREMELY bad idea to keep stacking regions on top of regions,
either via over-dubs or editing. this will massively increase the disk
i/o as the playhead passes over/through these areas, and when there are
enough layers will actually stop the transport because the disk cannot
keep up.

if you are overdubbing, use playlists for each take. if you are editing,
just don't do it.
