If the format is floating point there are indeed different ways of doing this
and they will produce different results numerically. Whether this can be heard
is another matter. Anyone claiming this should substantiate those claims by
either
 
- a theory that explains it AND measurements that confirm it,
OR
- a double blind test in controlled and verifiable conditions.

I'm talking as a scientist here, not as a salesperson.

Given the fact that there are lots of people prepared to exchange
substantial sums of money for some equipment that flushes 'the old
and tired electrons' from their cables to make them sound better,
I am not at all surprised by any claims that are not backed by solid
evidence. The simple fact is that they sell.
