Yes, of course there are other options. SSH tunneling is cool too. Any
remote will work fine. I was thinking VNC because it is platform
independent.

Why use VNC when we have the X Window System? With your big Linux box on
stage as you put it, what is the advantage of VNC over just configuring
xdm (or your preferred equivalent) on your laptop or whatever to let you
log into it from the back of the hall?
