the plugin code has been reworked 3 times since those versions. for
precisely the reasons you're discovering. please test with a newer
version of ardour. this plugin count stuff has been really hard to get
right, and there were always nasty problems along the way. i am
optimistic and moderately confident that they have been solved now.
this is an area that has seen a lot of work since the version you've
been using.
