Two items:
1) Although you didnt mention your sampling rate,

yes, that would have been useful ;) 48 kHz at 24-bit, which i imagine is nothing so drastic that would change your (or other's) advice.
if you are only doing 4 audio and 1 midi track then disk performance should not be an issue at all. Ive layed 24 trackes at 44.1/24 sampling to an old ATA-100 drive before. If you are using a modern machine with SATA drives then you should be able to exceed that.

2) The performance "hit" for using LVM is, for all practical purposes, non-existant.

3) I know i said "two items", but now that i have your attention... I can absolutely confirm what Steve and Neil responded. Ive been a Linux admin for 15 years and can say unequivocally that LVM has never been a performance issue on any system i worked on.

Hope that helps!!!
all the responses have definitely helped. thanks to you, Steve and Niel for taking the time to respond. i will definitely go with LVM for the flexibility on my audio drive based on your recommendations.

thanks again.
ahoy all,

sorry for the slightly off topic post, but this list has lots of experienced users who perhaps have more info than i have been able to find elsewhere.

i am wondering if anyone has experience or advice on using LVM for a partition that will be used by Ardour for recording audio and MIDI, probably no more than 4 audio channels and an additional MIDI channel at a time being recorded, along with simultaneous playback. it seems like the performance hit for LVM is not too substantial, especially when compared to the flexibility it provides (e.g. when i run out of HD space for recording). however, the best info i could find was this old SO post:

as i do not have the luxury of spare drive space to test it out myself, i would appreciate any experience/thoughts/opinions using LVM with Ardour.

thanks.
