Nope.
A region != audio file. (See earlier on in the tech ref, don't have a
link to it right now). This will not remove any audio file that is
the source of any region, which all you are doing with the split
command is creating a new region with the source of the same audio
file. Hope that makes sense.
If you bounced the portion after you split it, Ardour would create a
new audio file for it, and then you could delete all instances of the
old region or other regions with the same source. Then you could
cleanup, and after you closed and reopened Ardour you could flush the
wastebasket(Intentionally designed this way) and that would remove
unsued audio which your original recordings would be now. Personally
this method would be far to prone for error on larger track count
recording sessions for my comfort so I don't recommend it, but to each
their own.

along the same lines: i have always been looking for a way to remove only the regions that are not associated with any (used or unused) playlist? it seems like session cleanup will remove all regions not associated with an active region (i.e. regions that are only in unused playlists), as well as the currently unused playlists themselves. what i am looking for is a way to remove regions that may have been created/etc, but are currently not used by any playlist, selected/active or unused.

this would help in sessions with lots of editing and thus creation/throwing away of regions, to help lower the region count (which seems to slow down saves to a few to ~8 seconds, at least on A2, depending on the number of regions of course). as i use playlists extensively for takes and alternate mixes, the ability to throw out regions that are "orphaned" from any playlist would be great. i will file a feature request if this is not already possible in A2or A3.

note that i have tried the "delete unused" option in the region list, but again, it seems to remove regions that are associated with unused playlists.

finally, how does cleanup deal with a region that is still referenced in a snapshot, but not in the current session?

thanks in advance.
