I've got lines where I think they should be - put there by ardour in conference with qjackctl. I guess I need a symbol map that tells me what I see in the Connections window matches up to Real World things like output, monitor, etc...<br>

Ahh, there you have it. I just assumed it would be the same for FireWire devices such as yours, but it's not (let's blame it on my lack of experience with non-PCI stuff). So now what you need to make sure of is that you connect the readable client to the writable client (do you see a line/curve?), in this case Ardour to Freebob (I assume yet again that monitors are Firepod outputs, and Freebob  is the recording device  in Ardour settings). That's pretty much generic suggestion, so you have to dig up things on your own til someone has better advice (: Don't worry though, quite a number of people have the same Presonus working well with JACK + Ardour.<div>

Yes. You can see in the output from Jack as well as from the grayed out menu item that Jack and Ardour are talking. If you look past the break below where Jack is idling you can see the connection process in some detail as I have Jack set to verbose. The important bit is:<span><br>

<br>So you have QJackCtl, but haven't checked out the "Connect" window? Your Firepod should provide a number of hardware  inputs/outputs on the left  and right panel, both under "system". You should see the "capture" ports on the left, and "playback" on the right. Highlight both systems and connect, then you can work your way down to which capture port(s) should connect to which pair of playback ports for recording (can be multiple inputs) and stereo playback (2 outputs for a typical pair of monitors; not surround).<br>
