I'm using an AMD K7D Master with two Athlon 2400's. It's OK, but
occasionally locks up hard...I think that's been reduced by realizing
the ECC feature of my RAM was turned off in the BIOS. Even so, it
seems to me (only anecdotal evidence to back this) that SMP actually
hurts latency due to the extra scheduling, etc. problems introduced.
I still haven't figured out how to configure my system to do any
better than "-n 3 -p 256" for jackd. I suspect many of my problems
are the 64-bit PCI SCSI controller I have running my disks, especially
since in the AMD MP architecture it has to sit above the other, 32-bit
PCI bus where my M-Audio Delta 66 soundcard fits. I'm crossing my
fingers that 2.6.12 with Mingo's realtime-preempt patches will solve
my problems...right now I'm running an unpatched 2.6.9 kernel since my
last attempt at rebuilding to incorporate both my ATI Radeon 9800
drivers and low-latency resulted in me losing a large chunk of my XFS
filesystem through a series of hard crashes.
In any case, should you opt for the AMD MP, i have nice quiet cooling
in my LITEON FS020 case with an Antec TRUE480 power supply, two Pabst
120mm fans, Thermalright SLK-900A heat sinks, and Zalman ZM-F2 92mm
fans on my CPU's. This is entirely ruined by my whining FUJITSU
MAN3367MP and QUANTUM ATLAS10K2 10,000 RPM hard drives, and possibly
by the little fan on my Radeon video card.
good luck,
eric.

Not scientifically I'm afraid Wolfgang. I simply ran the 8ch under Linux
and compared that to my XP install of the time. BIG difference. I don't
have an XP box anymore (never mind) so can't be more scientific, but the
effect was a real one; the actual numbers just a guess, but they'd be
pretty close...say -83 V -85dB approx or thereabouts I'd say.
Thinking about it, I have an XP games box at home here, and I have my
DAW at home today also...hhhmmm, might just install and do an A-B..good
idea.
I'll let you know.
Best,
Geoff.

I have found that the Genecomp range from <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.x">http://www.x</a>-
buz.com/products.html save and automate in Ardour. It does work for some
plugs anyway. Try them; a lot are free and work very nicely.Let's start
that list !

Ambience Reverb also saves using automation. As you rightly pointed out
Mark, they dont save from their own interface...but automation is a fine
compromise to me anyway. It seems that if the plug runs normally and
reports it's controls to jack_fst then you can automate and save. That's
how it's panned out so far for me anyway.
So many plugs..such little time

Geoff

automation is never saved via a plugin on any platform, its always host
side. AFAIK, VST plugins can save state just like LADSPA, unless they
are flagged as wanting to use "chunks", which are a way of the plugin
saving its own settings in an opaque way. IIRC, Ambience is one such
plugin. I have not written code to support this, although its not really
hard to do.

Hey Mark ..BTW: a very nice free EQ which does save it's current state
in Ardour without automation is LinearPhaseGraphicEQ 2
available from
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.ismusic.ne.jp/slim_slow_slider/vst/">http://www.ismusic.ne.jp/slim_slow_slider/vst/</a>
just page down to it. Haven't tried the other stuff there yet. Most
important is to be sure you install msvcr71.dll into your wine (windows)
system folder. If you haven't got that .dll others won't work either.

I to have an Xp box and Fervent software on Linux.
I will run some 16 track tests with Ardour and cakewalk
just to see how they react.
Not very scifi I know.

HI
I have just started using ardour for my 16 track studio.
I seem to have lost some work when I cleaned out some stuff
when the project got a bit big.
I now assume that you can't use the clean folders from within a project.
When I restarted Ardour I couldn't load the last saved files.
Is this a known thing?
I'm not on the latest release yet.
Cheers
Bob

Checking through the archive shows a build for OSX was posted late April.
Was wondering if anyone is using Ardour in OSX successfully in a pro-audio
environment and whether an OSX build (even a beta) is available (or will be
soon)?
Thanks,
