as far as I know the default routing matrix after starting hdspmixer
mixes all playback channel outputs to SPDIF. In hdspmixer, if 'submix'
is checked (make sure also 'Playback' is checked), you may select SPDIF
underneath the playback channels, and de-activate all channels except
e.g. 25/26. Keep in mind that this is a full 26x26 matrix - it is easy
to miss some channels/matrix entries.
A command line solution using amixer was discussed on LAU/LAD many years
ago, I found a link here:

This works fine also with the hdsp9652.
