I guess the usecase is this:

99.99% use the faderport as intended.
0.01% hey, now I would really like to be able to just make this fader 
"MIDI-learn" and write out automation for <obscure-plugin-parameter>.

So no fundamental usability change, just "pause original function, do 
something special", then "switch back".
