OK, good, you already have a single time code source so that eliminates
one problem (free running time sourced drifting relative to one another).

The default might be OK, just depends on whether you need to know the
actual time it was recorded or if you might have a full day worth of
recordings to go through. Setting to actual (wall clock) time could have
the disadvantage that Robin pointed out, if you import directly into
Ardour you may end up with a project with 12 or 15 hours of blank space at
the beginning.

I had to find the manual for the R8, it seems to have several options for
timecode settings.
Internal free run vs. internal record run is one, when set to record run
there could be some delay in starting up the time code generator when you
start recording. Not for sure, just something to verify. Should not be
an issue when set to internal RTC run according to the manual description.

Is internal auto mute set to on or off? That mutes timecode output when
recording is stopped, that could be another place that there is an
indeterminate delay when going from off to on.

It might be useful to use a clapboard or similar to give you an easy to
find location in the audio and video to check whether the "few seconds
off" value is always the same or whether it changes from start to start.
