Basic gain structure applies here throughout your chain.

Beyond that there are multiple ways to adjust level in Ardour, keep in mind
that if you add two signals together you are increasing the overall signal,
so if you have several maxed signals and mix them together you will be
clipping on output.  It is not uncommon to 1. Record at the equivalent to
-18dBFS or so to give you plenty of headroom just in case, and 2. Lower
your starting mix levels by 10 or 20 dB across the board, especially for
larger mixes, to ensure you don't clip any outputs.
