Damien - I also mysteriously started getting xruns with my Saffire Pro 
40 when I upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04. I had uncabled my system to 
install an additional SSD for the new distro version. When I hooked 
everything back up I accidentally plugged the firewire cable into the 
motherboard port which had a controller chip that is known to have 
issues http://ffado.org/?q=node/251 instead of the add-in card I bought 
with a recommend chip. Any chance you did something similar? Good luck - Joe
