For what it's worth, I would love Ardour to come with built in, known good
plugins for the basics: high/low pass and shelving filters, simple parametric
notch/boost, and straightforward dynamics.

I usually use the Glame highpass/lowpass, the Steve Harris triple band
parametric (the single seems buggy on my system) and fast lookahead limiter
and ccasionally the gate and the SC4 compressor.

For effects and more character-oriented sound process, plugins have their 
place of course, but have the basics immediately to hand, cross-platform
and reliable would certainly be a good thing.
