It is indeed still the latest release.

While the audio-file loss was understood and fixed, a hotfix release for
that is pending, mainly because there exists a similar issue for MIDI
files (which is also understood, but not fixed, yet).

Yes, one can create proper crash reports with it (it includes debug
symbols). See http://ardour.org/debugging_ardour

Sadly, tracking this particular issue down is/was not straight forward
and requires quite a bit of [developer] expertise.

If you feel up to it, the easiest way to handle this would be to drop by
on IRC (Ardour Menu > Help > Chat), but it would be prudent to check out
the latest git version first (CairoCanvas branch, currently Ardour
3.5.3140). It contains lots of fixes.
