It was that way on Ardour 2.x versions too.  My workaround was to route the
output of the frozen track to a bus so i could control the volume level
from there.

I assume the functionality is based on the fact that you wouldnt be able to
correctly "freeze" a track with post-fader plugins without freezing the
fader itself.  This is because some post-fader plugins output changes based
on fader level (eg. compression or overdrive) .
