depending on how you log in, you may be missing some default paths for 
executables. try /usr/bin/ardour3 or /usr/local/bin/ardour3 if you 
compiled it yourself.
if all that fails, as root do

cd /
find -iname "*ardour*"

grab a coffee while you wait.
