I've had both installed on my production DAW for a while now with no
problems. I use 2.8.x for work and ardour3 for testing. If you're starting
them from the command line in Linux, 2.8.x start command is ardour2, and for
3.x it's ardour3, so there's no confusion there. 

I keep separate directories for ardour2 and ardour3 sessions to avoid
mistakes (like accidentally opening an a2 session in a3 and finding it no
longer works in a2).
