Is it used for single instruments and voices only and usually not used
for the stereo sum? On old professional recordings stereo sum
compression often does "pumping" or at least there are sometimes strange
loudness jumps.
I read a little bit about “Motown Trick”, “New York Drum Trick”, it
seems to be not used for the stereo sum.

I often lose too much dynamic when using a compressor or need to cut too
much frequencies I want to keep, when not using a compressor for the
stereo sum in the homestudio. In better homestudios and professional
studios this is less an issue for me, than it is at home.

I'll listen to some old Detroit music.

Thanks,
Ralf
