Thanks Nedko. That was indeed part of the problem as the newer Gentoo
Jack packaging now requires the new use flag to get jackd at all.

However even after starting jackd by hand Ardour3 failed to run and
jackd essentially crashed.

I'll come back to this possibly over the weekend or next week when I
can get some time.
