The only compressor I have heard that is in the direction you want is the 
"leveler" compressor on the channel strips included in Mixbus (according to 
Kevin Ward - mixcoach.com). The leveler do only have threshold, speed and 
make-up gain controls, but the speed control seems to mainly control the 
attack while the release is fast all the time.

You will probably want to ask this question in the Linux Audio User ( [LAU] ) 
group, because this issue is not really Ardour specific.
