PS:

If VST_PLUGINS or VST_PATH isn't set I guess Ardour try to find them in 
/usr/local/lib/vst and /usr/lib/vst, but because I'm not an Ardour user, 
I'm not completely sure how Ardour does handle it for Linux, still less 
for Mac OS.
