That wouldn't be necessary if you only want to assess the relative numbers of Linux or OS-X users but if you wanted to know how much time each user spends running Ardour, I guess you could keep a running count somewhere and retrieve it once a year (with the user's consent).  My point was that if the data is being 'phoned home' less frequently, it's much less likely that users will perceive it as intrusive.  The less intrusive it is, the more likely it becomes that users will co-operate and consequently. the more accurate will be the collected results.
