you're right. actually, you musn't store server logs with clear IP addresses 
indefinitely, and they are only endured as long as they are a technical 
neccessity in the first place (to prevent harm, solve problems etc.). it is 
not allowed to store or analyse IP addresses out of curiosity -- at least not 
without approval. most hosters/providers here have implemented pseudonymous 
logs (the key to retrieve the real IP is stored elsewhere and it's 
automatically deleted after a certain time, i'd have to research a little to 
find out how many days exactly).
