Sadly I don't have the luxury of being able to change my graphics card
because this is an onboard chip, built into my laptop.... :-(

In fact here was only one so I renamed it and rebooted. No difference
unfortunately. I discovered that this procedure would get rid of the error
dialog saying, "I've detected a panel already running" etc:-
1) Use CTRL+ALT+F1 to escape back to a terminal
2) Log in as myself
3) sudo killall gnome-panel
4) sudo killall gdm
The above starts X without the error dialog- but I still only get the blank
white screen. Given that X starts successfully if I log in as root, I'm
starting to wonder if this is a permissions problem. Maybe there's a file
somewhere whose permissions got changed when I upgraded. And now it can be
opened by root but not by me. Does that seem plausible?
