I don't think that people are not reading manuals because of a lack of time.
Its more because of Douglas Adams definition of technology vs. things that just
work: If it comes with a manual, its technology and not something that just
works.

If you are really searching the manual before asking on lists/forums/irc, you
are _really_ in a minority.
