I think there'd been a problem at the install stage. After encountering the
errors I re-ran 'scons -- clean', followed by 'scons DEBUG=0', followed by
'scons install'. At the (now second) install stage I got a message saying
"scons install is up to date" (which it can't possibly have been because I'd
just rebuilt everything). I then deleted the executable and all shared
objects from /usr/local/lib/ardour2 and all its subfolders and I ran 'scons
install' once again. This time, Ardour now works as expected without giving
me the errors.

Maybe this is a good time to mention that I've had similar problems
recently. In fact I've noticed that libclearlooks.so is almost never
overwritten during a 'scons install' - even if a newer copy has just been
built. That may not have been the problem in this case but I suspect it
must be something similar.

John
