I thought it was alt+m that brought up the mixer?

I've not seen that.  But, I wonder if you could find something by 
viewing the .ardour file?  Also, are you launching ardour from 
command-line?  If not, try that.  Look at the messages in the 
terminal window.  Maybe you can report some of that here?
