Also - check that the regions are both opaque.

If one (or both) are transparent I don't think you get a crossfade.

This option is checked, and others too:

Menu->Options->Crossfades->{Active:1,Show:1,Created Automatically:1}

But I solved my problem by just removing ".ardour2/" directory :-)
