Firstly, the audio-data goes to disk directly, no need to press save for that. 
With the (very) old 0.99.X I sometimes get crashes directly after recording 
(on pressing stop) but then either the automatic save worked and everything 
is well on restart of ardour or it can recover the crash. I never had data 
lost. Even if ardour doesn't know about the region, the audio is still on the 
disk...
