I have used a Echo Darla 20 card. I had to fetch the firmware package from the 
alsa site: ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/firmware/

I compiled it and installed it to /lib/firmware (I'm at work right now, don't 
remember exactly. I'll verify it when I get home). 

After that the sound card was automatically detected on reboot.
