An MCU Extender is an extension unit for the Mackie Control Universal or
Mackie Control Universal Pro.  You need the MCU or MCU Pro before you can
use an extender.

That page covers both the base unit and extender.  That is also the newer
MCU Pro, the older MCU is still quite useable though, albiet I have done my
testing on the MCU Pro, both I believe(Though always double check me, I can
only vouch for the MCU Pro) support the Logic Protocol that Ardour uses.
