PAM = Pluggable Authentication Modules

its a system designed to allow various different ways of authenticating
(and authorizing) various roles/users/permissions/capabilities. it has a
config file that defines various things.

i can't tell you how to use it to set up access for regular (non-root)
users so that they can use RT scheduling and mlock, but the LAU mailing
list and google will. i do know that you need a very very up-to-date
version of PAM for this to work, plus a very very up-to-date version of
bash (or whatever other shell you may use).

there are known issues, yes. especially if you have any proprietary
drivers in your kernel, but even without. i don't know if a solution has
yet been found. again, LAU or LAD mailing lists would be a better place
to ask.
