I don't know anything about how ardour interacts with the sound
files. But, I can't help but wonder if Audacity's file chunking
method could help speed up ardour's interaction too. Months ago
I read a technical write-up on this, but all I can find right now
is this:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/fileformats.htm

I have no idea whether this would help or hurt, and ardour's not
in any way broken. But, I thought I'd mention this on the off
chance that it's been considered. Certainly making ardour cruise
through sound files quickly has been considered, or I wouldn't
have been able to play my ~70 track session, which I still do
at times. So cool....
