If you unmute the tracks and see a disk light, and then mute the
tracks and do not see a disk light, then I'd say it's pretty
conclusive that the tracks are not being read when muted.

Paul's comment about deactivating the track are probably the best idea
though. Muting a track will still allow automation on the track to be
run which uses up some CPU power when things are changing.
