to avoid: all the heavy dists like mandriva, suse, and stuff like that. 
IMHO.
Try Ubuntu (minimal install) with his 2.6 kernel with low-latency patch, 
and add via apt all the packages you need...
jack and ardour, basically. Now you have a small and fast DAW! :-)
