note that if you do any system tinkering on debian, you are at risk of
breaking ardour. for example, casually moving up to a newer version of 
g++. debian packages of ardour are built against the system-wide version
of several C++ packages; if they do not exactly match the ones expected
by ardour at run time (and were not compiled in the precise way), ardour
will break in odd ways.

if you do not tinker with debian, this is almost certainly not a
problem.
