How big is your buffer? I have an Athlon 1800MHz and a Delta44, and I
can run jack with -p 256 -n 2 rock solidly. Very occasional xruns
happen with -p 128 -n 2 when unexpected things happen on the system.
At -p 256 -n 2, I can play live and monitor software and it's not
distracting at all.

I like this option if the buffer reduction doesn't work for you. No
extra investment, no real change to your recording practice - it easy,
and I'm lazy!
