I found a way to handle it.  I had two takes in this session, and was using 
the second take.  I'd just hit the Home key to go back to the start and 
started recording again, instead of creating a new Ardour session.  Removing 
the tracks (regions?) from the first take stopped the crashing, and I was 
able to cut the dead space just like I used to.
