On the subject of getting jack and ardour to work.
I would like to say it drives me crazy when I get a lot of people
telling me to install a new distro. The right way is to find a distro
you like and learn to use it.
I believe you have jack and ardour installed.
You can try using various jackd or jackstart commands.
Take a look at man jackd, man jackstart, man ardour.
qjackctl is nice but you might need to use a simple command line start
of jackd. Next go to a new term window and type ardour.
I would do all this as root.
If this does not work use qjackctl to get as much info as you can.
your soundcard might not be able to run full duplex or realtime.
Hardware configurations can also mess things up.
I look around my system for installed apps in /usr/doc, /etc,
I set my system up in the following order.

1. Got the soundcard and alsa working. I run kde and use the control
center to turn the sound on and off for various apps.
Type alsamixer and adjust levels with arrows, mutes with m and capture
with space. quit alsamixer with esc and then type alsactl store.
Use alsaconf to set up the modules.conf. (looks like you did.)

2. Patched the kernel for low latency.

3. Used a system like apt to get and install all the packages I needed
in one easy step.

Lots of info is out there on how to complete these steps.
Take a look at linuxquestions.org
http://www.djcj.org/LAU/guide/Low_latency-Mini-HOWTO.php3
http://jackit.sourceforge.net/docs/faq.php

Remember, the solution is always easier than the instructions so use
your head.
I did it all in Slackware 10!
Good luck.
